The Indian Premier League season-3 will commence in a colourful ceremony at the DY Patil Stadium on March 12 with the defending champions Deccan Chargers taking on Kolkata Knight Riders.

Deccan Chargers have scripted one of the memorable comebacks witnessed in the Twenty20 history when they won the title in South Africa after being down in the dumps in the first. They will be one of the teams to watch out for in a format where fortune changes every over.

While every team boasts of superstars in the form of Sourav Ganguly, M.S. Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Adam Gilchrist, Virender Sehwag, Shane Warne, Yuvraj Singh and Anil Kumble in their ranks, the winner of this edition will be a team that performs the best in the pressure-cooker situations and comes out trumps.

Twenty20 cricket might be an infant when compared to the likes of Test cricket and ODIs but this format can give the other two, a run for their money. Last year’s Deccan Chargers versus Kolkata Knight Riders went all the way down to the wire with Chargers’ Rohit Sharma sinking the hopes of KKR with a magical sixer off the last ball.

That’s just one instance of how this game can make the fans chew off your nails in tension and anticipation. Going by the success rates of the first two editions has achieved, this IPL-4 promises to only get better.

With two new teams set to be added in the coming days and 10 team from IPL-4, the competition levels too would soar.

So who are the stars to watch out for in IPL-4?

Adam Gilchrist: The legendary Oz wicketkeeper has scripted one of the greatest turnarounds for Deccan Chargers and he will once again hold the key for the Chargers’ run in the tournament. With his attacking brand of batting and brilliant leadership skills, the left-hander will be the one to watch out for.

Herschelle Gibbs: He may not have set the world on fire in the first two editions, but Gibbs has the experience and skill required to set the pace for the defending champions. Gibbs can lift the spirits of his team with his fielding skills and can disrupt the apple-cart of any team on his team.

Manish Pandey: He has been part of the U-19 World Cup squad that won the tournament under Virat Kohli and gave his resume a boost when he scored a superb century against Deccan Chargers in the South African edition last year. He has since been spoken highly as a prospect in the Indian team.

Sachin Tendulkar: Never ever count the Master out. That’s what he said through his batting in that monumental knock at Gwalior against the Proteas. He will be a vital cog for the Mumbai Indians and the batting legend will want to lift the title for his team.

Sanath Jayasuriya: Opens with Sachin and you don’t require me to tell you how destructive he can be on his day. He is electric on the field at a grand old age and can be quite handy with the ball.

Rohit Sharma: May not have done full justice to his talent at the international level but this youngster has enough firepower to fire on all the cylinders and come up trumps. His show at the IPL could prove to be a great case in getting him back into the Indian team for good.

R.P. Singh: This talented left-armer made a great start to his career and was in the scheme of things till an indifferent form with the ball for a prolonged period saw him out of the selectors’ sight. He was the purple-cap owner in the last edition of the cash-awash tournament and it will be interesting to see how he comes about with the ball this time.

Shane Warne: The legendary leggie from Oz has been instrumental in getting his franchise — the Rajasthan Royals clinch the inaugural edition of the tournament and there is no reason why he will not be want to try his luck yet again in India.

M.S. Dhoni: The talismanic Indian skipper has been leading the Chennai Super Kings with aplomb but in the first edition they lost out on the last ball of the tourney while they failed to cross the hurdle in IPL-2 too held in South Africa last year. Dhoni has a team that is not short of talented souls but a collective approach towards victory on a given day is what will differentiate the winners from the rest.

Virender Sehwag: With lady luck failing him in the first two editions, Viru promptly asked the owners to name Gautam Gambhir as the skipper for the third edition. Known for his dashing skills on the wicket, he is also a player who plays the game in the most simplest manner possible. Despite his captaincy gone, expect no mercy from the Delhi Devil to the cherry hurlers.

Yuvraj Singh: Another talented lad whose leadership skills came into question and teammate Kumar Sangakkara was made the captain. But the Punjab Puttar will leave no stone unturned in proving that ‘Singh is King’.

Irfan Pathan: He may be the last man but never the least. For someone who was the mainstay in the Indian side not long ago, life surely has gone awry. Such has been his plight that he was not in the 30-member probables for the World Cup to be held this year in West Indies. Nevertheless, Irfan is the one to watch out for in the IPL extravaganza and he will more than ready to settle a few scores on the ground.

Also, there are so many cricketers who have been left out of the XII as it was difficult to accomodate them here. Names such as Matthew Hayden, Kieron Pollard, VVS Laxman, Harbhajan Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Gautam Gambhir, Ajit Agarkar, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene too can prove to be more than handful in the coming event.

Kolkata Knight Riders are keeping their cards close to their chest. Speculation has been rife as to who will finally be taking over as the coach of the KKR. The last screening phase will be held in Mumbai on Sunday.

Tipped to be returning back into the mainfold as the skipper for the third edition of the Indian Premier League, Sourav Ganguly will join the team think-tank – Shah Rukh Khan and Jay Mehta – in Mumbai on Sunday and the trio ‘interview’ former India coach John Wright, former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram and former India batsman Pravin Amre.

Sources close to the team pointed out Wright and Akram are the only high profile candidates in fray.

The duo are known for their closeness to Ganguly, though the New Zealander is unlikely to get the post as he does not have any experience of coaching Twenty20 side.

As for Akram, who has Twenty20 experience with Hampshire, may not take up the post on a full time basis as it would clash with his commentary assignments.

If the Pakistani great is roped in, there would be a different role, similar to that of a consultant that would not demand a full time availability, according to a source.

Ganguly has earlier said the decision will be taken by Shah Rukh and Mehta and that he would have a say.
“I am more concerned with the team. Jay and Shah Rukh will decide on the coach,” Ganguly had said.

Sunday’s meeting may also decide on the pending captaincy decision, that is almost certain to go to Ganguly, whose contract with Knight Riders will expire after the upcoming season.

Former English cricketers Richard Pybus and Dermot Reeve, and former Australian cricketer Michael Bevan had given presentations last week.

The Knight Riders have also apparently approached Dav Whatmore and Duncan Fletcher among the other foreign candidates.

“Pybus is said to have emerged as the favourite as the management was impressed with his presentation. He has been asked to stay on for a second round of meeting on August 30,” a Knight Riders source in Mumbai said.

Among the Indian candidates, Knight Riders have interviewed W V Raman, Ashok Malhotra and Lalchand Rajupt.

There are also unconfirmed reports that the side has also contacted the likes of Chandrakant Pandit and Paras Mhambrey.

The fingers will be crossed

For all those of you who thought Test cricket were on a decline, be assured that its a just passing phase. The advent of Twenty20 might have kept the big match players at bay but New Zealand stumper Brendon McCullum does not think Twenty20 format’s overwhelming success has sounded Test cricket’s death knell.

The right-hander maintains that the longer version would always remain the pinnacle of the game. McCullum said he wanted to become a premier Test batsman and does not think the traditional format of the game cricket is on its deathbed. “Test cricket is still so special. I cannot see that it’ll ever die,” he said. “It may take a different course, but I don’t think it’ll die. There’s too much history, there’s too much support, there are too many purists out there for it to die,” McCullum was quoted as saying in an ICC release.

Making a comparison of both the formats, McCullum said, “Twenty20 is a vehicle to get more people to the game so that cricket has more followers. If we can do that and then we can even have a small percentage of them into Test followers, I think we would be doing our job. I cannot imagine Test cricket dying. Of course guys have their priorities and maybe the youngsters would like to play Twenty20 a little more but Test cricket would still survive because it’s the pinnacle of the game.”

Dwelling on keeping, McCullum, who represents Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League, said Australian stumper-batsman Adam Gilchrist has changed the game for the glovesmen. “Adam Gilchrist changed the face of what a wicketkeeper’s role in the team was. He was phenomenal and he did it against all trends and he changed ideas of how a wicketkeeper should be involved in the team,” he said.

Looks like the Indian Premier governing council clearing the way for the induction of the ‘rebel’ Indian Cricket League players, some of the franchises have started to evaluate available players who could make a difference in the third edition of the T20 extravaganza.
The Kolkata Knight Riders, who had a sad show in the previous edition in South Africa, are seriously pondering a few foreign players (who did well in the ICL) for a change of fortunes in the third edition of this high-profile event.
Although the team management declined to comment over the matter, insiders in the KKR camp have mentioned that Justin Kemp, Craig McMillan, Azhar Mahmood and Imran Nazir could be the franchises’ likely players.
“It’s too early to talk names since a formal approval (from the BCCI) is pending. But yes, we are ready to draft the ICL players in the squad as soon as there are no other formalities remaining,” a KKR source said. “At the same time, you have the explosive Imran Nazir, who could be destructuve on his day,” he added.
Apart from the foreign players, KKR also seemed to be interested with Rajagopal Sathish and Ganpathy Vignesh, both of whom represented Chennai Superstars in the ‘rebel’ league.

It certainly is good news for the tournament and for the rebel stars who were left in a lurch not long ago. We have a game on guys!

Well, the first part of the news was expected while the second part did stump for sure.

Dada aka Sourav Ganguly is most certain to be back as the captain while former India coach John Wright will be taking over as the coach of Kolkata Knight Riders in the third edition of the Indian Premier League in 2010, various media reports pointed out on Saturday.

The official word is still, sources said that there could be a major reshuffle with former India coach Wright likely to replace John Buchanan as Knight Riders coach, while former Aussie middle-order mainstay Michael Bevan will be in the coaching panel.

Sources have confirmed that Ganguly had a one-on-one with owner Shah Rukh Khan when the duo had met recently in London to receive doctorates by the University of Central Lancashire.

“Both Dada and Shah Rukh Khan had a meeting and discussed on this when the left-hander was in London last week. They have agreed in priniciple that Ganguly will lead the side,” the source mentioned.

However, the KKR management are tightlipped about this development. It has to be seen as to how this new development shapes particularly when the team performed miserably in the 2009 season and were plagued with controversies especially after Ganguly was dethroned just two days before the start of the tournament.

The news of Ganguly taking over the reins come a day after he was being roped in by a Bengali channel to host a show called ‘Dadagiri’….

Sure enough, Dada is back and how!

While what Buchanan thinks of Sourav Ganguly’s Twenty20 stint is now known to the world, not many would know that the erstwhile coach of Kolkata Knight Riders had asked the southpaw to step down after the first season of the Indian Premier League.
In his book ‘’The Future of Cricket: The rise of Twenty20’, Buchanan revealed advising the Bengal boy to step down even as Dada refused to give away.

Read the excerpts mentioned below:
“At the end of the (inaugural IPL) tournament I told something he did not want to hear. ‘I really think your game was off the pace and the more you play T20, the more harm you will do yourself,’ I told him. Sourav responded to my frank assessment by claiming he had at least one more year of 20-over cricket in him. He told me his main aim was to get into the Test side against Australia, an aim he did achieve before announcing his Test retirement. He basically said to me ‘Thank you for your concerns, but I don’t agree with what you are saying’— Buchanan wrote.
The ex-Australian coach pointed out that the format of T20 was tad too late for players like Ganguly. “…Ganguly had created an incredible brand for himself in India. It might seem strange, but this is why I question his suitability for and need to play T20. I am concerned that he will erode his brand, his stature, by playing in the IPL,” Buchanan pointed out.
Not surprisingly, Buchanan finds Ganguly to be a man of contradictions but also interestingly mentions him to be a fascinating leader.
“Our captain Sourav Ganguly, the Prince of Kolkata, or Dada as he is affectionately nicknamed, is a fascinating character, a man of contradictions. I am sure psychologists would find him intriguing,” wrote the 56-year-old.

“I found him a gentleman to work with yet I finished the tournament still feeling I didn’t know him,” he said. Buchanan also tried to explain Ganguly’s habit of turning late at toss in the 2004 series against Australia which infuriated rival captain Steve Waugh.

“I went into the IPL with an open mind about Sourav, who had been an antagonist of Australian sides I coached. He is a lovely person but he lives in his own world. He used to drive Stephen Waugh crazy by being late for the toss. That might have been partly strategic, but also he was simply unaware of its importance. He would be in the rooms, in his own world, when he would be told it was time for the toss. He would not be ready and would have to get changed before meeting his by-now irritated opposing captain,” he said.

Buchanan remarked that Dada’s habit of irritating the opposition was not always pre-meditated. “Ganguly has always had the ability to mentally unsettle his opponents. It was not always by design but Waugh saw it as lack of respect and common courtesy. At times, I feel Sourav is guilty of that, but on the other occasions, I believe he is simply in his own world and loses track of time. He gives off impression that everything will happen in good time, but it will be in his good time. He is not too concerned about other people’s views about him…that is not to say he is arrogant. I have always found him very humble, polite and respectful, but to have him somewhere arrive on time… Well, let’s just say he was mercurial,” he wrote.
