Authoritative Australia arrest awkward England in Ashes 2009


It went as per the script as Australia tightened their noose on compatriots England on the second day of the Ashes 2009 fourth Test at Leeds, Headingley that could tilt the Ashes to 1-1.
England were tottering at 82 for 5, needing another 261 runs to make Australia bat again after Australia’s Marcus North scoring a magnificient 110 to help his team pile on 445 in their first innings.
In England’s meagre first innings 102 their numbers three, four and five had managed nine runs between them. But on Saturday, the trio could only score seven paltry runs.
Australia’s Hilfenhaus struck two vital blows in successive balls to start the downslide when the hosts were 58 without loss.
Strauss, Bopara, Bell and Collingwood departed in quick succession and when Cook departed, the England team had lost five wickets for 20 runs in 44 balls with Johnson taking three for one in 14.
James Anderson and Matthew Prior, dropped were at the crease.
Earlier, Marcus North who was not out on seven, completed his third century in only his sixth Test before being the last man to be dismissed by Stuart Broad, who took six for 91.
The Australians have finally managed to showcase their stamp of authority for the second time since the first Test at Cardiff and the hosts will be hoping for some rain even as Ricky ‘Punter’ Ponting will be betting his money on the number of champagne bottles to be bought to the dressing room to sip up their celebrations.
With 261 runs seperating the two teams and five wickets eyed by the visitors, one needs to know what approach the hosts take on day three. Watch out this space for more…..
